your Mac model and macOS version, and a short description of what happened.
Getting started
NeonLock has two parts: the iPhone app, and a small free companion app for your
computer called NeonLockMac, which runs in the menu bar and performs the
lock. You need both.
- Install the companion app. Download it on your computer, open the
disk image, and drag NeonLockMac to your Applications folder.
Download NeonLockMac
Prefer Homebrew? Run brew install --cask sparksss/neonlock/neonlock
- Launch it. A ⚡ bolt icon appears in the menu bar. Click it to confirm
it says "Advertising".
- Turn on "Open at Login" from the ⚡ menu-bar icon, so the agent
starts automatically whenever you log in.
- Install NeonLock on your iPhone from the App Store, open it, and allow Bluetooth when prompted.
- Pair. Tap the laptop icon in the top right, find your computer under
"Nearby", and tap it. It moves to "Your Macs" with a green dot.
- Tap the big power button — the screen locks instantly.
Frequently asked questions
My computer doesn't appear under "Nearby"
- Make sure NeonLockMac is running — look for the ⚡ bolt in the menu bar.
- Check Bluetooth is on for both devices.
- Keep the two devices within a few metres while pairing.
- Open the picker screen again — scanning only runs while it is on screen.
The button is amber and says "Disconnected"
Amber means no live connection. The app reconnects on its own when the computer is
awake and in range. If it persists, quit and reopen NeonLockMac on the computer, or
unpair and pair again from the iPhone (swipe left on the device in the list to unpair).
The distance reading looks wrong
Distance is estimated from Bluetooth signal strength, so it is approximate and affected
by walls, bodies and pockets. For better accuracy, stand exactly 1 metre away and tap
Calibrate in Settings → Distance Accuracy.
Auto-lock didn't trigger when I walked away
- Check Auto-lock when I walk away is on in Settings.
- The trigger needs two consecutive readings past your set distance, so give it a few
seconds.
- Try a shorter distance — in a small room the signal may never drop far enough.
macOS says the companion app can't be opened
The current download is signed and notarized by Apple, so it should open normally. If you
still see a warning, you may have an older copy — delete it, download again using the button
above, and open the fresh version.
Does NeonLock collect my data?
No. There is no account, no analytics and no server. Everything happens directly between
your two devices over Bluetooth. See the Privacy Policy.
What do I need to run it?
- iPhone running iOS 16 or later
- A computer running macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later with NeonLockMac installed
- Bluetooth enabled on both
